There is a new addon landing. If you work with IBL in Blender for modeling come by soon. In the mean time enjoy the teaser (or poke me to provide some feedback and perhaps even join the alpha testing period).

IBL autosetup for Cycles and Luxrender

IBL Re-Aligment

Home made panoramas also work 😉

Point projection for calibration tweaking

Ideas, questions, comments, feel free to drop a line 😉

    Hi Dalai,

Great to see what you’re working on it looks very promising.

Since you’re interested in IBL you’ll certainly be interested in this

    http://www.hdrlabs.com/sibl/index.html

it’s a free IBL manager editor that can generate sets of IBLs (low res for lighting, high res for reflections) which can then be saved and loaded into your 3d app of choice. This is done via loaders for different applications, by applying the textures to the correct texture slots and assignments. To make it even more promising for Blender it’s written in python. It’s well worth a look in my opinion and could easily implemented by someone with the skills.

  2. I’ve been doing some heavy research on this of late, and there are certainly a wide range of opinions and techniques. I’m keen on combining my photography with 3D, particularly using Blender & Cycles. Count me in for the alpha testing and I’ll see if it suits the workflow I’m looking for!

p.s., I looked at the SIBL stuff from hdrlabs, and it sure does look impressive; if it could find its way into Blender maybe as part of this plugin solution, it would be exciting stuff.

@Troy, alright. you got yourself an email with all the instructions..
Welcome to the alpha testing team 😉 Nice photos in your site btw 😉

Also, I was talking with a friend who has tried SIBL before. He wasn’t impressed by the overall ideas though. His overall impression was that the optimizations may not be needed in today’s architecture (soft and hardware). I guess I will have to try it myself eventually.

I haven’t tried it in awhile. Use an old Blender for it, but be ware that this was more a proof-of-concept to use in a research than a refined end user experience solution.
